Distracted

By Jay Bushman

I didn’t notice anything on the first day. I was always good at blocking out distractions and focusing on the task at hand. And putting your own needs to the side for the sake of the work is a necessary corporate survival skill.

I do recall that late that afternoon, while sitting at my desk I noticed an electric feeling in the air behind me.  In the same way you sometimes hear a high-pitched whine that vanishes before you can figure out if it’s coming from one of your computers, or if it’s the death shriek of another inner-ear hair, heralding your advancing tinnitus.

Except this wasn’t completely audible. It was also a physical sensation. Like leaving your back to the sun for a little too long.  No matter which way I turned, the feeling/sound was always somewhere behind me. A vertiginous moment.

I shut my eyes and took a deep breath. The sensation was gone. And I went back to work.

It wasn’t until the second day that I noticed the wings.

I must ask if these wings are brown,
With underside burnt umber down?
If so I'm sorry
Please try not to worry
I may have just met you in town...
